In this series, I bring a time-honored process to life, highlighting moments of nostalgia and memories that are dear to each of us. Quilting, a pastime many may have watched their mothers or grandmothers partake in, is not only the blanket you hold when you are cold and want to bundle up at home but also a symbol of comfort, family, and memories. Quilts are sewn together piece by piece, creating a map of the time spent assembling them. Stitch by stitch, a whole is made. I see this as a reflection of our lives— moment by moment, memory by memory, our individual nature is sewn together. Each piece of our lives can stand separate, but once combined, our personalities emerge, each unique from the other.

I use photographs and embroidery as a means to symbolize quilting. Flowers, a common motif in fabrics, are the subject of my prints. Each flower stands separately from one another but is even more beautiful once viewed together. The three flowers represent my family— my mom, my sister, and myself. The essence of the project stands through this connection, bringing to light the strength between this bond. I embroider each photograph with patterns reminiscent of quilting squares. This technique recalls the textile nature of quilts and connects with my audience, inviting them to reflect on the quilts they may have grown up with. Through these methods, I deconstruct an object many hold near and dear, revealing how something so simple can carry so much life and meaning.
